River Clean-up Project Launched in Central Cuba

HAVANA TIMES, April 3 — State-owned enterprises in the central Cuban province of Sancti Spiritus are implementing a project to promote the gradual clean-up of the Yayabo River, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.

Repairs will be made to the collector systems built in the 1980s on the riverbanks, as well an effort to address the problem of indiscriminate dumping in specific areas.

However, specialists from the National Institute of Water Resources feel that the amount of work being done and the financial resources approved are inadequate.

The Yayabo River has been the natural supplier of water to the city of Sancti Spiritus for almost five centuries, but the technical infrastructure has suffered from deterioration and a lack of maintenance for decades, highlights the news note.
