Two Key Cuban Gov. Ministers Sacked

HAVANA TIMES — An article published in the Granma newspaper today announced the “release from their posts” of Medardo Diaz Toledo, the Minister of Informatics and Communications, and Tomas Benitez Hernandez, the head of Basic Industry.

The Council of State accepted the actions at the request of President Raul Castro without revealing the reasons for the dismissals.

The portfolio of Informatics and Communications will be assumed by engineer Maimir Mesa Ramos, while that of the Basic Industry will be taken over by engineer Alfredo Lopez Valdes. Both were working as first deputies in their respective ministries.

Brigadier General Diaz Toledo, who served as minister barely a year and a half, will rejoin the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, while Hernandez Benitez will be assigned “other tasks,” according to the article.
