HAVANA TIMES – As is the case year after year, International Workers’ Day in Cuba was promoted by the government, Communist Party and the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC) as a day of celebration instead of one of worker demands as in other countries.

The event, which always draws hundreds of thousands of Cubans and many foreign visitors, also championed the causes of the embattled Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and expressed eternal support for Fidel and Raul Castro.

  • Do you think emagicmtman that they have a porto-potty for the aged dignitaries on the stage, or do they cross their legs. Could do awful things to their prostates. Fidel had the advantage of sanitary bags to deal with his colostomy.

  • Thanks for the fotos, Juan and Elio! Hope to get back for another May Day (last one was 2006, Fidel’s final May Day appearance). Incidentally, judging from one foto, Habana could do with a “Port-o-Potty” franchise!

  • Shampoo, I always endeavor to stick to fact. When I wrote that Cuba has the fourth highest rate of incarceration in the world I was using the following latest figures (2016 or latest)

    US 698 per 100,000
    Turkmenistan 583 per 100,000
Virgin Islands (US) 542 per 100,000
    Cuba 510 per 100,000

For your interest it is Thailand that is 7th at 468 per 100,000.
Dr. Ernesto Guevara de Serna Lynch was a qualified medical doctor and at the time when he and Raul Castro met, was working as a doctor at the Mexico City Hospital. There are those who refer to him ceasing his medical studies when he set out on his British Norton motor cycle with Alberto Granado to tour South America. But following that he returned to university in 1953 to complete his studies and graduate. Hope that the correction on both points is of help to you. Surely you would not wish to deny Guevara his Irish heritage or his qualifications – of which he was sufficiently proud to visit Ireland?

  • Time for Diaz-Canel to listen to the police, like Raul, he lacks a sense of humour – but then there isn’t much that is funny about “Socialismo”.

  • Cuba is the 7th highest country by prison population rate, yet is still way lower than the U.S.
And Che wasn’t a doctor, he was a medic. His name was Ernesto Guevara, period. He damn sure said that quote but his followers well know they shouldn’t follow every step of the man, we all say crazy things.

  • If he is wearing a plaid cotton shirt with a regulation haircut, he is an undercover agent. Everybody knows who they are.

  • As I wrote:
“Don’t challenge the system, accept it, stay mute and exist.”
This also provides the opportunity to quote Dr. Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara de Serna Lynch again.
“Youth have to learn to think and act as a mass, to think as an individual is criminal.”
How do workers whose union is subservient to the communist dictatorship express their view?
MININT and the CDR are ever present, ably managed by General Alejandro Castro Espin, son of President Raul Castro Ruz. Cuba has the fourth highest level of incarceration in the world – who is in jail?
