Cuban Judo Teams Set for the World Cup in Brazil
HAVANA TIMES — The members of the Cuban judo teams of both sexes that will participate on October 27 and 28 in the World Judo Championships to be held in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, were announced on Wednesday in Havana.
Cuba athlete Idalis Ortiz, an Olympic gold medalist in the over 78 kilograms class at the 2012 London games, will head the female delegation; while Asley Gonzalez, the London 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 90 kilo class, will lead the men, reported the Cuban Information Agency.
Rounding out the men’s team will be Gilberto Solar (66 kilos), Magdiel Estrada (73), Cruz Osmay or Jorge Martinez (81), Jose Armenteros (+90) and Yoandry Margarejo (+90) as a backup. The women’s tournament will feature Olympic two-time silver medalist Yanet Bermoy (52), as well as Aliuska Ojeda (57), Maricet Espinosa (63) and Onix Cortes (70).
The Cuban female team took second place in this competition at the world event in the British capital this past summer, while the men’s team finished in fifth by country.
