Cuba Earns Bronze in World League Volleyball

HAVANA TIMES — After a seven-year absence, Cuba returned to the podium of the World Volleyball League after beating Bulgaria on Sunday in the fight for the bronze medal during finals held in the Bulgarian city of Sofia.

Poland defeated the United States for the gold medal.

According to a report by the Prensa Latina news agency, the Cubans took about two hours to finally overcome their hosts 3 sets to 2 (25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 25-23 and 15-12).

This was Cuba’s 14th victory over Bulgaria after 24 matches in the history of these contests, and with this having been number five out of eight tie-breakers.

The Caribbean squad therefore made it to third place in the fray after seven years without receiving a medal, which they did in the 2005 competition in Belgrade, Serbia.
