Electoral Rolls Being Prepped in Cuba

HAVANA TIMES — Cuban authorities began updating and correcting the voter registry on Thursday in preparation for the first phase of the general elections, scheduled for October 21. In this balloting, delegates to municipal assemblies will be selected across the country, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.

The secretary of the National Electoral Commission (CEN), Ruben Perez, explained to reporters that the office of Identification Cards and Voter Registration has begun collating information gathered during a recent process of the validation of voter lists.

According to the CEN, the lists must accurately reflect some 8.5 million Cuban voters at this stage. These islanders will then choose their representatives from nearly 32,200 candidates though a grass roots process of neighborhood nomination meetings.

This Sunday an electoral “trial run” will take place to test the capacities of the 29,500 polling stations in the Caribbean country.
