Spain’s FM to Travel to Cuba

Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Miguel Angel Moratinos will travel to Cuba next Monday to back the current dialogue between the Catholic Church and the island’s government regarding the situation of political prisoners. Moratinos reiterated Madrid’s interest in maintaining the dialogue with the Cuban authorities.

Cuba Travel Ban Foes Win a Battle

If it passes, the bill, entitled “The Travel Restriction Reform and Export Enhancement Act”, would go the Senate where pro-embargo forces — mainly Republicans, but also a handful of anti-Castro Democrats — are in the minority but can resort to a number of procedural moves that could delay or even prevent a vote from taking place.

Cuba develops vaccines against whooping cough and cholera

Cuba’s National Scientific Research Centre (CNIC) is developing a vaccine against whooping cough and another against cholera, affirmed Rafael Fando, director of biotechnology of that institution, when speaking at the 10th CNIC 2010 International Scientific Congress being held in the island’s capital.

Farmers Association Seeks Women

The non-governmental National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) hopes to incorporate 100,000 women linked to agricultural production, said Rilma Román, president of the association in the Cuban capital.

“We have received training on gender subjects, which has allowed us to be better prepared to understand the lack of understanding of men and also of some women, to overcome machismo and at times the fear of participating,” affirmed Román.

Cuba’s Light Industry Minister Canned

Cuba’s minister of light industry, Jose Hernandez Bernardez, has been removed from his post announced the local press on Wednesday. No reason was given for the replacement of the official by deputy minister of internal commerce, Damar Maceo Cruz.

A Drop in the Ocean

Also, dogs are excellent guards. A security guard can be sleeping, but the dog remains alert. Recently a dog was honored at the Institute of Geology and Paleontology because it prevented the robbery of two air conditioners. Sometime around 9:30 at night, the dog went to the entrance gate and began barking and indicating that something was in the area.

Summer Strains Energy Situation

The arrival of summer has led to an increase in power consumption and the noncompliance of the saving plan established by the Cuban government, announced Tatiana Amarán Bogachova, director of the National Electricity Union’s department of rational use of energy. According to the official, since late May the country has exceeded the plan by more than 3,000 tons of oil.

Cuba-Syria Sign Cooperation Agreements

The governments of Cuba and Syria signed several cooperation agreements as part of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s visit to the island, where he met yesterday with his counterpart Raul Castro. The two countries leaders signed documents on the struggle against drug trafficking and in the area of agriculture and communications.

Cuba to Host Convention on Tourism Studies

The first International Convention on Tourism Studies will be held at the Havana Convention Center on July 12-16, announced Ramon Martin, dean of the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Havana. The meeting will discuss papers on tourism related to events, incentive trips, organization and management, marketing and technological innovation.
