An Old Phone Saved My Life

Now, I will tell you about an incident I had a few days ago when I was returning home from work.

I am talking about a location visible from the central highway. It has a single floor, and its façade may seem austere, only until you enter.

When I accepted my current job, I didn’t know the area where it was located. “Be careful, because there’s a favela there,” they told me.

Everything was closed: schools, banks, businesses, except for hospitals and a few select food preparation centers.

This past summer both Trump and Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro stated that if they lose their respective elections there would be a bloodbath.

Despite the poor condition of the abandoned complex, some new neighbors have appeared in one of the first-floor apartments.

The last time I’d seen a dentist here in Brazil was at a state clinic after I’d already spent several months enduring a toothache.

Lately, I’m feeling nostalgia for so many things. Almost any time from the past seems better to me than now.
