Chavez Wins Third Term in Venezuela

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez yesterday won a third term in office with a solid, almost ten percentage point victory over rival Henrique Capriles. This will allow Chavez to remain in power until 2019 and Cuba to continue receiving its lifeline of imported oil. The vote was 55% to 44%, less of a margin than in previous elections but still considerable.

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez won a third term in office on Sunday with 54.42% of the vote with 90% of the polling stations reporting. In second place was opposition unity candidate Henrique Capriles con 44.47%, announced the president of the electoral authorities.
