Ibero-American Summit in Portugal

The two-day 19th Ibero-American Summit got underway Monday in Estéril, Portugal with delegations from the 22 member countries. Cuba is represented by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez.

Cuba Rebuffs Honduras Elections

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez urged today the presidents meeting in the 19th Iberian-American Summit in Portugal that they not recognize the results of the elections held yesterday in Honduras because that gesture “would betray the proclaimed principles of peace, democracy and justice.”

Lobo Takes Questioned Honduras Vote

Porfirio Lobo, the presidential candidate of the right-wing National Party, won the elections Sunday in Honduras that were backed by the de facto government in power since the Jun. 28 coup that overthrew President Manuel Zelaya. A number of Latin American countries, including Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela, stated ahead of the elections that they would not recognise the results, as no agreement was reached in talks between Zelaya and the de facto regime of Roberto Micheletti, to overcome the political crisis.

Cuba FM Meets with European Troika

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez held talks Saturday with the European troika, represented by his Spanish counterpart Miguel Angel Moratinos, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Assistance Karel De Gucht and Swedish Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Frank Belfrage, reported diplomatic sources. It was the fourth political dialogue meeting between Cuba and the Troika.

Cuban Christian Women Write Obama

A group of Cuban evangelical women sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle requesting the review of the case of the Cuban 5 imprisoned in the United States charged with espionage, who Cuba considers fighters against terrorism.

Cuban Gov. Recognizes Work of Oxfam

The Cuban authorities recognized today the contribution of the non-governmental organization Oxfam International for the food security programs and social work it has backed in agricultural communities, reported IPS. Oxfam is carrying out more than 50 cooperation projects in the island.

Honduras Elections Legit?

Two days short of the Honduran “elections,” it appears these will be recognized as legitimate by only four countries around the world: the United States, Peru, Panama and Colombia. While the de facto government has deployed more than 30,000 troops of the army and police across the entire country, as well as calling up thousands of army reservists to safeguard the electoral process, the National Front Against the Coup d’état continues with its call to the public to boycott the vote. In addition, that opposition organization persists in its condemnation of systematic violations of human rights and is preparing for a new stage of struggle.

Military Exercise Begins

The Bastion 2009 Strategic Exercise began in the early morning hours of Thursday, reported IPS citing the local press. This military maneuver, the largest carried out in the island since 2004, “will make it possible to increase the deterrent capacity to avoid a military confrontation, according to the principle that there is no better way of winning a war than avoiding it,” affirmed the ruling Communist Party’s official daily.

Chavez Meets with Castro Brothers

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez made a brief working visit to Cuba this Tuesday, during which he met with his counterpart Raúl Castro and with former President Fidel Castro to talk about bilateral collaboration and the next summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA) to be held in Cuba in December.
