Former Cuban President Fidel Castro accused the US Department of State on Thursday of supporting the military coup in Honduras that toppled President Manuel Zelaya. Meanwhile, with protests escalating inside Honduras the de facto government of Roberto Micheletti has reinstated a curfew to try and hamper public demonstrations supporting Zelaya.

Four new tanks, each with a capacity for 20,000 cubic meters, are being built in the Cienfuegos oil refinery. The investment is considered fundamental for the projected increase in production at the renovated plant, restored jointly by Cuba and Venezuela.

Cuban Five Wife Denied Visa, Again

The US State Department has once again denied a visa to Adriana Perez to visit her husband Gerardo Hernandez, one of a group of Cuban men who infiltrated Miami-based exile organizations that plot violent attacks against the island and its interests. Perez was categorized as “a threat to the stability and national security of the United States,” the same justification for denial used during the Bush administration.

Tension Mounts for Honduras Military

The United States and the European Union are cranking up the pressure for talks brokered by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias to bring about a restoration of democracy in Honduras, while urging both sides to refrain from violence. Meanwhile Zelaya sought to hasten the negotiations, basically giving Micheletti one week to step down.

The Cuban government proposed to the United States a new migration agreement during the resumption of the bilateral talks on this issue, held Tuesday in New York, reported IPS. The migration talks had been suspended in 2004 by the Bush administration.

Priest’s Murder under Investigation

Spanish priest Mariano Arroyo was found dead Monday in the Nuestra Señora de Regla parish church in the Cuban capital. The case is still under investigation. If corroborated, Arroyo would be the second Catholic priest killed this year.
