Cuba Gov. Calls For New Public Debate
HAVANA TIMES, Sept. 15 – The Cuban government opened a new popular debate to discuss the country’s problems and define measures to help it come out of the long economic crisis, reported IPS on Tuesday.
The discussion, which will be based on a yet to be disclosed “Study Material”, and will take place at workplaces and educational centers, the cells of the ruling Communist Party and the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, the island’s largest neighborhood organization.
HT: This “new popular debate to discuss the country’s problems and define measures to help it come out of the long economic crisis” is certainly appropriate. The question our modern cooperative socialist movement in the U.S. would like to ask is: “Will contributions to this important discussion/debate by foreign socialists be considered, or at least given a hearing?”
Cubans may feel that foreigners are not welcome in this discussion/debate b/c it is Cuba’s business, and doesn’t concern anyone else. If it didn’t concern anyone else, this would be correct. But the truth is that Cuba’s economic and social functioning does concern everyone on this planet, including of course us in the U.S.
You have the same problem we have here. What is “workable” socialism, and how can it be achieved in both Cuba, the U.S., and other countries. The discussion/debate in Cuba therefore is everybody’s business, b/c Cuban socialism’s successes and failures affect us all. Thanks.
