Orchid Festival Begins in Cuba
HAVANA TIMES – The third National Orchid Festival was officially opened Wednesday in the capital at the Quinta de los Molinos estate, which will run through Saturday, reported Prensa Latina.
The event, which also includes exhibits of bonsai and other attractive plants cultivated by institutions and private collectors of the island, will make awards in the categories of exotic plants, Cuban, best set, and popularity.
The program also includes workshops, lectures, guided tours and photo exhibitions.
Cuba is home to about three hundred native orchid species. Some are in danger of extinction due to intense illegal gathering of collectors and dealers, and human damage caused to their habitats.
