Taxi Fares Lowered 50% in Havana

HAVANA TIMES – Without taking into account the drivers and owners of private vehicles, the local government decided to lower the prices of collective taxis in the capital. Many trips that previously cost 10 pesos now cost 5 and “compliance is mandatory”.

The measure was clearly designed to force taxi drivers to take longer routes to receive a rate of 10 to 20 pesos per passenger or stop receiving half of the money if they keep shorter routes.

The mode of shorter routes was assumed by most taxi drivers in the second half of 2016, when the price of fuel on the black market rose sharply due to cuts in the quotas issued in state institutions.

The government further warned that violation of the new tariffs will result in the taxi owner losing their operating license.
