US Asks Cuba for Independent Investigation into Paya’s Death

HAVANA TIMES — The US Senate asked the Cuban government on Tuesday to permit an impartial and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of political opposition leader Oswaldo Paya, reported the AFP news agency.

A resolution, published Wednesday in the journal of Congress, “recognizes and honors the life and exemplary leadership” of Paya and his “courage” in opposing the Cuban system.

The text also condemns the arrest of fifty dissidents during the funeral ceremonies of the leader of the outlawed Christian Liberation Movement, an action that was also criticized by the Obama administration last week.
