HAVANA TIMES, Oct. 15 – The top echelons of the Young Communist League (UJC) removed its secretary general, Julio Martínez, and announced the holding of its 9th Congress on April 3 and 4, 2010, reported IPS on Thursday.

The UJC, which claims a half million members, is from where the Communist Party gets its young members.

The new secretary general is Liudmila Alamo Dueñas, who had been the second secretary of the organization.

Presiding over the meeting of the national committee of the UJC that made the leadership change was Cuba’s First Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura.

In one of his interventions Machado said: “More than slogans, what we need is analysis, discussion and convincing and above all the personal example of the activist.  All that we do today will guarantee the future of the Revolution and make it long lasting; will improve our socialism, not deform it.”

  • This report is VERY different from the one which appeared in the Cuban and international media where no one said that Julio Martinez had been “removed”. Indeed quite the opposite was the way it was reported in Granma, which commented, entirely favorably, that:

Participants at the plenum praised the work of “Julito” and spoke of his permanent disposition to help and courageously tackle the most difficult issues. They reflected on his humility and described him as “the well-known heart of our organization, to continue growing.”

While Machado Ventura participated and spoke at the gathering, NONE of the reports said that this 78-year old veteran Cuban revolutionary leader in any sense “presided” over this meeting of the YOUNG Communist League.

    A different report:

  • Thanks, Walter. I wonder if someone out there can explain this apparent difference in reportage, or at least comment on it intelligently?
