Honduran Soccer Stadium Closed to Cuban Players

HAVANA TIMES — Entry was denied to the Cuban soccer team at the local sports stadium in the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula, reported the Diez newspaper.

When the Cubans arrived at the Morazon stadium, the staff of the Municipal Sports Institute (INMUDE) refused to let them in, arguing that they had no permission to open the gates. Consequently, the players had to move their workout to another field located about 10 minutes away.

The Cuban team was supposed to have practiced at the Morazan stadium on Sunday night prior to playing a game against Honduras today in the fourth qualifying round for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The Honduran Soccer Association has issued a statement extending its “sincere apology” to the island’s delegation for the “embarrassing” institutional decision.
