Notions of Race in Cuba

Since the middle of September, I’ve been attending a graduate level course every Thursday on “Notions of Race in Cuba.” Those taking the course make up a highly diverse group in terms of age and fields of study, an element that enriches the discussions.

Language School

One of the reasons that brought me to this school was the need to improve my English, since I didn’t get the training I needed at the university. I can see that the teachers employ an excellent methodology and are very well prepared.

Sports, the Right to Art

A Bruise on My Belly

At the problematic time of 4:30 pm on Wednesday, I took the route 5 bus to get from the Havana municipality of Vedado to Old Havana. To my delight, the vehicle wasn’t so crowded — like it usually is — so I tried to walk to the back.

A Casino Wheel from Havana

Dancing “casino” (Cuban salsa) is a delight. In it, an unusual power flows from any pair of dancers in the middle of their performance, with this energy sometimes multiplying as we witness the choreographic movements of a rueda de casino (casino dancing with multiple partners).

Job Placement

In the middle of the fifth year of any major at the University of Havana, two issues greatly concern most students: their thesis (the culminating trial that validates them in the specialty they’re studying) and the job they’ll be placed in upon graduation.
