Open Space Gallery Shows Students’ Work

The works of third year students of the Superior Institute of Art (ISA) are on display at the Espacio Abierto (Open Space) Gallery, located in the Vedado district through mid-April. What predominates are combinations of art forms (painting, sculpture, installations, photography and videos). (10 photos)

Adventures of the Gentleman with the Shrunken Limb

Nosing through a friend’s bookshelf, I found a work titled Aventuras del caballero del miembro encogido (Adventures of the Gentleman with the Shrunken Limb), which was written by the Cuban comedy group “Nos y Otros” (1982-1997). I took advantage of this chance to borrow this copy.

Remember Cuba’s ‘Volumen Uno’ Exhibit

On January 14, when marking the anniversary of the 1981 inauguration of the exhibit “Volumen Ono,” I tried to imagine what would be the best way to pay tribute to this ground breaking exhibition. It is one that serves as a milestone in the history of the visual arts in Cuba.

My Julieta Venegas Concert

The Mexican singer Julieta Venegas was in Cuba to support the initiative “Todas contracorriente” (Everyone Against the Current), which opposes violence against women and girls. She gave a concert at the National Theater in Havana.

Notions of Race in Cuba

Since the middle of September, I’ve been attending a graduate level course every Thursday on “Notions of Race in Cuba.” Those taking the course make up a highly diverse group in terms of age and fields of study, an element that enriches the discussions.

Language School

One of the reasons that brought me to this school was the need to improve my English, since I didn’t get the training I needed at the university. I can see that the teachers employ an excellent methodology and are very well prepared.

Sports, the Right to Art

The gallery “Espacio Abierto” (Open Space), located in Havana’s Vedado district at the headquarters of the magazine Revolucion y Cultura, is celebrating the holding of the 2012 Olympic Games in London with the exhibit El Deporte, derecho del Arte (Sports, the Right to Art). (10 photos)

A Bruise on My Belly

At the problematic time of 4:30 pm on Wednesday, I took the route 5 bus to get from the Havana municipality of Vedado to Old Havana. To my delight, the vehicle wasn’t so crowded — like it usually is — so I tried to walk to the back.

A Casino Wheel from Havana

Dancing “casino” (Cuban salsa) is a delight. In it, an unusual power flows from any pair of dancers in the middle of their performance, with this energy sometimes multiplying as we witness the choreographic movements of a rueda de casino (casino dancing with multiple partners).
