Cuba Baseball Finals Could End Tonight

The Cuban baseball season could come to an end tonight if Pinar del Rio finishes off Ciego de Avila in game five of their championship series. On Thursday the pride of the island’s westernmost province held on for a 5-4 win over Ciego’s top pitcher Vladimir Garcia putting the series at three games to one. Vladimir Baños was the winner for Pinar.

Orlando Bosch Dies in Miami at 84

Orlando Bosch, who dedicated his life over the last half century to the violent overthrow of the Cuban government, died in Miami on Wednesday at the age of 84. Along with Luis Posada Carriles, Bosch is credited with the 1976 bombing of a Cuban passenger plane that took the life of 73 persons off the coast of Barbados.

Just two weeks after a major military parade to remember the 1961 defeat of the Bay of Pigs invasion, many Cubans will march again on Sunday May 1, International Workers Day. Since the holiday falls on Sunday the Ministry of Labor announced today that Monday May 2 would be treated as a national holiday at the island’s workplaces.

Ciego Wins Cuba Finals Opener 5-3

Ciego de Avila knocked out Yosvani Torres with a five-run third inning and Vladimir Garcia kept Pinar del Rio at bay to win his fifth playoff game of the postseason and give his Eastern Division team a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series for the Cuban baseball title.
