Nyad Swims Cuba to Florida on Fifth Try

US swimmer Diana Nyad completed on Monday her quest to cross the 110 miles between Cuba to Florida. It was her fifth try to complete the feat, reported dpa news. Nyad, 64, arrvied close to Key West, after more than 50 hours in the water and became the first person to complete the course without protection of a shark cage.

Cuba’s Cinemateca for September 2013

After undergoing reparations in August, Cuba’s Cinemateca has a host of films ready for the month of September. The main theater, the Charles Chaplin, will feature Russian cinema from Sept. 1-7; an Italian comedy retrospective from Sept. 8-15 and 17-21, a one night showing of the Cuban film Siglo las luces on Sept. 16, and Mexican cinema of the 1990s from Sept. 22-30.

Major Department Store in Havana Shut Down for Health Issues

Havana’s Almacenes Ultra department store will remain closed “until further notice” on instructions from the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP). The busy store was closed last week owing to “large concentrations of mosquitos and rodents and severe leaks in sanitary facilities,” store sources confirmed.
