Cuba Ranks 26th in Medals at World Athletics Championships

HAVANA TIMES, March 12 — Picking up only a single bronze medal, Cuba ended up in 26th place in medals at the Fourteenth World Athletics Indoor Championships, which concluded on Sunday in Istanbul, Turkey.

Triple jumper Mabel Gay, the only Cuban medalist in the games, recorded a jump of 14.29 meters, while her male counterpart, Alexis Copello, finished seventh on the list.

Cuba suffered from the absence of hurdler Dayron Robles, though its top athletes in each of the other disciplines participated in the competition.

The island’s performance was considered by one sportswriter on Cuban morning television news as the worst in the history of these games, after attaining only eleventh place in the overall rankings based on points.
