Cuba Resumes Consular Services in USA

The Cuban government announced today that it will resume consular services at the Cuban Interests Section in Washington until February 17. The consulate had suspended services on November 26when the bank that was handling its accounts announced the immediate ceasing of the service.

Cuba’s Raul Castro and Obama to Attend Mandela Funeral

Presidents Raul Castro and Barack Obama are two of the 90 plus leaders expected at the funeral of Nelson Mandela on Tuesday in Johannesburg. Castro is traveling with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla. Former US presidents Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton will also be attending.

Human Smugglers Accused of Extorting Cuban Baseball Players

US federal authorities cracked down on a human contraband network implicated in the kidnapping and extortion of Cuban baseball players. The perpetrators were also allegedly involved in the South Florida Medicare fraud. A suit was filed by Texas Rangers player Leonys Martin last week in Miami.

Havana Weather for December 5-11

The influence of a high pressure zone brings sunny days to start this 7-day period. Occasional rain is possible during the end of the period with the passing of a cold front. In general the humidity will be low and the early mornings cooler. The high temperatures will average around 28°C (82 F), dropping to 26°C (79 F) by next Wednesday. The lows will be stable around 22°C (72 F).

Alan Gross Faces Death in Cuba if Obama Doesn’t Change Approach, says wife

The wife of USAID subcontractor Alan Gross, imprisoned in Cuba, held a rally outside the White House after delivering a letter to the President from her husband. She called on Obama to do “whatever it takes” to secure Alan’s release. Mrs. Gross rejected the State Department statement yesterday calling on the Cuban Government to “release Alan Gross immediately and unconditionally” saying that this tact has gotten them nowhere for the past four years and if the U.S. government does not drop the, “unconditionally, this will be a death sentence for Alan… Please Mr. President don’t leave Alan to die in Cuba.”

Cuba: Havana Housing Suffers New Blow

The rains last week sped up the persistent deterioration of poorly maintained Havana building infrastructure. The Cuban government reports today that at least 135 buildings suffered damage including 18 totally collapsed and two reported deaths.
